Server-Side GTM

Server-Side GTM & First-Party Tracking

Recover the conversions ad blockers and iOS quietly cost you. Move collection to a server you control — one retail client saw +30% recorded Google Ads conversions after the switch.

Ad blockers, ITP restrictions, and third-party cookie deprecation are killing your data quality. Server-side tracking is how you fight back, while respecting user privacy.

By moving tag processing to a server you control, you gain complete ownership of your data, extend cookie lifetimes, reduce client-side JavaScript, and implement Conversions APIs for platforms like Meta, Google, and TikTok.

What you get

  • Server container setup on GCP
  • First-party tracking subdomain
  • GA4 server-side configuration
  • Meta Conversions API
  • Google Ads Enhanced Conversions
  • Ongoing monitoring & support

What's Included

Server Infrastructure

Google Cloud Platform setup with auto-scaling, load balancing, and cost optimisation. Your server, your data, your control.

First-Party Domain

Custom subdomain configuration (e.g., data.yourdomain.com) for first-party cookie setting and extended cookie lifetimes beyond ITP restrictions.

GA4 Server-Side

Full GA4 migration to server-side tracking with improved data accuracy, reduced ad blocker impact, and proper user identification.

Conversions APIs

Meta CAPI, Google Ads Enhanced Conversions, TikTok Events API, LinkedIn CAPI: send conversion data server-to-server for better match rates.

Data Enrichment

Server-side data enrichment with user properties, hashed identifiers, and custom parameters before sending to analytics platforms.

Performance Boost

Reduced client-side JavaScript means faster page loads. Move heavy tracking logic off your website and onto the server.

My Process

Feasibility Assessment

Not every business needs server-side GTM. I assess your current setup, traffic volume, and goals to determine if SGTM is right for you.

Infrastructure Setup

Server container provisioning on Google Cloud with proper scaling rules, cost controls, and monitoring. First-party subdomain DNS configuration.

Client Configuration

I configure the GA4 client and any custom clients needed for your data streams. Request handling, data parsing, and response management.

Tag Migration

Move GA4 and advertising tags to the server container. Conversions API implementations for Meta, Google, and other platforms.

Testing & Validation

End-to-end testing of data flow, conversion deduplication, and platform integrations. I validate everything before cutting over.

Monitoring & Optimisation

Ongoing monitoring of server health, data quality, and costs. I tune the setup to balance performance and expense.

Problem

A retail client's server-side tagging ran on AWS and was quietly losing conversions. Google Ads and GA4 weren't seeing the full picture.

What I did

Migrated the entire Server-Side GTM stack from AWS to Google Cloud and rebuilt it for clean, first-party data collection.

+30%

Conversions recorded in Google Ads

+4%

Common questions

Is server-side GTM worth it?
If you spend on paid media and lose conversions to ad blockers, iOS/ITP, or consent, yes. Server-side tagging moves collection to a server you control, so more conversions are recorded and your ad platforms optimise on better data. For a low-traffic site with no paid media, client-side is usually enough, and I will tell you if that is your situation.
What is the difference between server-side and client-side GTM?
Client-side GTM runs tags in the visitor's browser, where ad blockers and privacy restrictions can stop them. Server-side GTM sends data to your own server container first, then forwards clean, first-party data to GA4, Google Ads, Meta, and others. It improves data quality, page speed, and control over what leaves your site.
How much does server-side GTM cost to run?
Hosting on Google Cloud typically runs from around £40 to £150 a month depending on traffic, on top of the one-off setup. For most advertisers, the conversions recovered cover that several times over. I size the infrastructure to your traffic so you are not overpaying.
Does server-side tracking keep me compliant?
It helps, when built correctly. Moving collection server-side does not remove your consent obligations, but it gives you precise control over what data is sent and where, which makes Consent Mode and first-party strategies far easier to enforce.
